Lesya Ukrainka is a pseudonym of the Ukrainian poetess Larysa Petrivna Kosach (1872-1913). A daughter of the Malorus writer Olena Pchilka, a niece of M.P. Dragomanov, Lesya entered the circle of the Ukrainian literary interests from childhood. Lesya's collection of poems "On the Wings of Songs" was published in 1893 and then in 1904. Their usual drawback is verbosity. With the publication of the second edition the best sides of Lesya's poetry became more vivid. Malorus itself is scantily represented in Lesya's poetry; there is neither Ukrainian nature nor Ukrainian folk mode of life in it. Mainly, Lesya is connected with Malorus through the language. The collection of 1904 does not contain any political poems which were printed in Galychyna editions such as for instance "Life and Word" in 1897. The other collections of her poems are "Thoughts and Dreams" (1899), "Responses" (1902). Lesya also wrote a number of prose stories such as "Such Is Her Fate", "Misfortune Will Teach", etc.
